Hello, you've reached the inbox of Kath-erine Lutece. I'm unavailable right now, but leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you!
I haven't, yet. To be honest, I've been so preoccupied with finals and the end of term, especially with the nightmare that was last week, that I doubt I would have realized even if I had.
[ why is he doing this. why is retrospec making him do this. why won't retrospec let him live.
he has never ridden a chocobo in his entire life, or a horse, back when they still existed - and the only person that he knows has ridden chocobos-slash-horses, ever, is kath.
which. of course, leads to where they are right now, considering that well. they're at the city's stables - and seto himself is looking very, very apprehensively at the black chocobo that he's supposed to be learning how to ride for this short chocobo race thing. ]
Are you sure this is a good idea?
[ DOUBT. SO MUCH DOUBT. how is he supposed to be good at, or win at something he's never done before. ]
[Don't be silly, Seto--in this instance, Retrospec is making him live! Katherine looks up from where she's adjusting the stirrups on the other side of the chocobo (curse Seto and his long legs!), with a smile and a laugh.]
Of course it is!
Riding is a good skill to have. In a lot of places it's still a mark of class, even. It might come in handy when you're looking for overseas investors.
[She finishes up with the stirrup and steps back, giving the bird a pat on the neck.]
There. You're probably tall enough to mount up from the ground, but let's go to the mounting block anyways. It's always easier that way the first time.
[Well... it's hardly the worst thing a stranger's ever asked her. And luckily, Kath has a bingo card of her own, even if she's not had enough time to really go after any of the objectives herself.]
I suppose you could, but you'll have to answer a question of mine, first. Are you a member of the Retrospec network?
I hope you're alright I can't help but worry after how we parted ways I know none of these are going through Maybe this weird app will take care of it. Who knows It looks like my team won't be back for quite a while though But we'll see you when we make it home
I don't know what the fuck Retrospec did and how they did it, but somehow a group of us are in space, which is why I'm going to try sending this out - maybe there's reception somehow.
I'm okay. I'm safe. These past two weeks have felt like a fever dream, but hopefully. There's a chance we have to come back, apparently. So I'm going to try my best to come back home as soon as I can.
I'm sorry if I worried you.
I hope you're safe.
action; backdated to sometime during end august after event
[ sometime in the aftermath of the august event, but before the retrospec post goes up, katherine will receive a short phone call.
it sounds worrying. it should sound worrying. because seto has never sounded this vulnerable ever, has never let his facade crack even under the stress, not even when he'd collapsed from exhaustion not once, but twice, but it's probably the most worrying phone call kath will ever receive from her surrogate big brother, and that alone should be enough to tell that something is very, very wrong. ]
Katherine? If you're free, could you drop by for a bit?
[ it cuts off there. but if and when kath arrives at seto's house, all the lights are off, and the door is left unlocked, almost as if waiting for her arrival.
and seto is sitting in front of a screen, and he's got his head in his hands, his arms propped up on the table as if that's the only thing that's keeping him upright, keeping him physically awake.
his phone is still on the table, screen dark.
he's burned out. he's burned out and there's no more adrenaline keeping him going and he's just. tired enough to look catatonic. and he probably has been catatonic for a few days judging by how untouched everything around him is, like he hasn't moved or disturbed anything. he probably doesn't even respond, up till the point where she actually physically approaches him, and that's when he kind of. snaps back to attention, somewhat.
somewhat. because his expression is still kind of blank, still kind of--
it's completely different from when kath would have seen him at the aid station, when he was piloting whatever mecha he had been saddled with, even if there hadn't been enough time to stop and catch up.
[Is there any question that she wouldn't come? That she wouldn't immediately drop whatever it is she's working on, leave regardless of the time of day, and be at Seto's house as soon as she possibly can? There isn't, and there shouldn't be, because Seto is one of the most important people in her life and there's nothing about his call that wasn't downright worrying.
Kath had seen him during the battle, of course, but only long enough to gasp in relief and fight the tears that threatened at seeing him whole and alive, not long enough to throw herself at him the way she'd wanted to and to simultaneously laugh and cry and threaten him about what might happen if he ever decided to scare her like that again. She hadn't been able to talk to him about what had happened nearly a month ago at the convention center, about the dragons that had attacked them and how Fai had saved her from one of them after. Life had gone back to normal, but whatever had happened to him while he'd been missing... that won't be erased. She needs to know what had happened to him, and she wants him to be able to talk about it too. Kath knows Seto, knows that he locks everything up inside of himself, and it's probably past time that she's asked him about some of this.
She isn't expecting how bad things are when she gets there.
The door's unlocked, first off, and the lights aren't on. "Seto?" she calls, but there's no response, nothing stirring until she finds him, sitting and still and alone and altogether lost, this look on his face that would break her heart if she wasn't already so worried.]
Oh, Seto.
[She drops her purse to the floor, crossing the room to him and leaning down so she can drape herself across his back, her head on his shoulder, wrapping her arms around his body so that she can envelop him in a tight hug.]
I suppose I don't have to ask if you're all right.
[EXCUSE YOU, LELOUCHE? Kath's mouth has literally dropped open from the audacity of this text--for once, the idea that it might be a misfire actually comes to mind, but ohhh would she like to give him an earful!]
I should hope that this text wasn't meant for me, elsewise I'll have to confess I had no idea that we were contesting in the first place.
Kath's going to stare at this message for a good minute until her phone locks itself... and then proceed to do it again. Because clearly, this can't be for her.]
It looks like Retrospec is still misfiring texts this month. Who are you buying roses for, Baren?
I was reminded recently, I never did get back to you in regards to our memories. Before I could even look into, I recalled a younger more mischevious brother of mine speaking about a certain Governor Roosevelt and our mutual friend.

I know none of these are going through

It looks like my team won't be back for quite a while though
But we'll see you when we make it home
(all delivered 8/24)
Kath, are you alright? Where are you?
[ later, when he realises there's ZERO RECEPTION. ]
Kath if you receive this, please let me know? And if you can't get me it's probably because I have no reception right now. I'll reply when I can.
